There are two main playable character types, the Net Navigators and the Digital Monsters, respectively shortened to NetNavis and Digimon.
NetNavi's are created to be multi-purpose programs for human use, from battling to online shopping to organizing. And while they are limited in base attacks they make up for it in raw versatility, able to use a multitude of chips to aid them in fights. They are also able to upgrade their systems with various programs. Not all navis are tied to a human, as solo Navis exist, but only Navis with a Net-Operator (the Navi's human partner) can use chips fully.
NetNavi's also obtain Double Cross, which allows Navis to use powers similar to another Navi.
Some say Digimon are highly evolved forms of internet viruses which may or may not contain scrap Navi data, and were allowed to change and multiply for years until they made their presence known. However, many just see digimon as some new internet lifeform that appeared out of nowhere. They roam freely in the wild, unbound to a Net-op, and are usually more beastial in form (But a digimon can befriend a human and somehow offer him/her a place to stay). They cannot use chips, nor can they use upgrade programs, and no actual digimon is human created. However they can utilize a number of built in attacks with no fear of exhausting their resources.
Digimon also have Digivolution, allowing them to take up different, stronger forms in battle.
Something of a medium between these are solo Navis. They are, for any number of reasons, ones without a Net-op who also wander the internet. They cannot use chips, but they can use programs. They have a set number of base attacks, but also can use Double Soul in battle.
