Needing Bits badly for purchase of a new security system back on his webpage, Wolf is busy exterminating viruses in the Alpha Net for a BBE request. Apparently one of the large viruses in the area had stolen an item from a Navi or some such crap he didn't really care about, and killing off the local population of Metools was the only way to successfully draw out it's attention.
Firing a buster round into one of the hard-hat wearing buggers racks up his kill count to 27. He hated when they retreated into their little shells, immune to damage, wasting his time. He kicked it's small form, causing it to sail through the air limply before breaking down into data. "Seriously, who's careless enough to just drop an item for a virus to pick up in the first place?" he asked aloud as he started off for the next group he could spot. The pathways were so cramped in the area, he was starting to wonder if he'd gone to the wrong place or been misinformed. There was no way a virus the size of what was mentioned on the BBE would even fit in this place.
30th kill confirmed, now came the answer to the question he'd been asking. The platform he was standing on expanded, phasing and pulsing as it seemed to glitch to a much larger area. Security gates appeared on either side, preventing him from escaping easily. His arms quickly changed to buster mode to prepare for the threat, gathering energy. "Huh...so it's a lockdown system, designed to trap intruders in with a 'guard-dog program' in a sort of boss room. I have one of these back home...but where's the guard-dog for this one?"
A low rumble is heard from above, and on instinct, rather than looking up at it, Wolf dodge-rolls away, avoiding the Gargantuan Metool's stomp attack with barely enough time. Roughly 30 times the size of a normal one, it was clear that whoever posted the request had accidentally stumbled into some sort of security setting. No time to think about it though, as this one had already displayed more ferocity than it's smaller counterparts.
"Let's see how much of a boss character you measure up to be!"

"You always do this, Fortune. Cripes, you lounge about more than a sloth. I thought you wanted to at least be a decent netbattler..."
"I can do it later... besides we trained, like, a half hour ago."
"Buuhhh, I should just go solo..."
Fortune sat on the couch, watching various internet videos using a computer connected to her TV. Every little chuckle that Fortune uttered was followed by Gekuu groaning. After the fifth time, Fortune straightened up.
"Look, fine! Jeeze! You're such a killjoy!"
"Well if I fought against something or someone I'd rather not die in the process."
Preparations didn't take too long, and soon the duo was traveling the net. Alpha net was the location, but it seemed as thought there weren't too many viruses around here. But sounds from a battle attracted the two to a Navi fighting a massive metool.
"What? They can get *that* big?" Fortune exclaimed.
"I guess so..."
"Don't go there."
"What? Don't be lazy, we can't just..."
"Laziness has nothing to do with it. The *last* time we stumbled onto a Navi fighting viruses she tried to kill you. I want to at least wait and see what the guy does when he sees you. If he asks then, sure, we'll help him."

The thing was deceptively fast for it's size, firing blasts wildly from it's mouth when he was in front of it. If he circled out of the way, it would either drop it's helmet to defend itself while rotating to face him properly before either continuing it's assault of shots or jumping toward him with little clearance underneath to escape aiming to either slam into Wolf or stomp him flat. Properly timed evasion helped a lot when dealing with this as it allowed him to get in a couple of hits as the Met needed time to reorient its self with no shield after a missed jump.
The problem was, the viruses from around the area seemed to be attracted to the fight. Metools were slowly making their way through the security gates to help their superior Met in battle, telling Wolf that the gates were only blocked from the inside, but things could still enter. The few that were entering the room weren't of great concern as he had time to dodge a jump and mop up the little ones before the big one could orient it's self. Now, however, he was running out of time before he'd be either killed by a lucky attack from the big one while distracted by the little ones or focus his fire on the Boss and hope the creeps don't overwhelm him.
His eyes catch a Navi just outside one of the security gates seeming to have a conversation with someone else. An enemy? No. A net-battling duo! It had to be! "HEY!" he called out, flipping to the side and throwing a couple more rounds in to finish off a weaker Metool. "Do you have any piercing damage or wide-area attacks that might be helpful? Got a few bits for your trouble!" He hated to admit it, but he'd bitten off more than he could chew with this little scrap.

Fortune sighed when she heard him ask for help. She had to actually do something. But at least she was helping someone. She didn't care for any additional rewards... and, hey, maybe she could count this as training.
"Yeah, alright. Vulcan Slot In!"
One of Gekuu's forearms changed into a vulcan cannon as he rushed into battle. There certainly were a lot of mets around, and with this many targets able to protect themselves, it would normally be an annoying fight. But their helmets were no match for the piercing shots of a vulcan. They fell relatively quickly.
Fortune spoke out to the navi. "Hey, you worry about that big guy. We'll take care of the small fries... but you may want to duck... Prism, Slot In!"
A crystal formed in Gekuu's other hand as he tossed it over to a large gathering of the viruses. And in mid air, the crystal grew larger. It looked like it would be able to smash a met... and one would be correct, but Fortune had other plans. Gekuu fired his Vulcan at the crystal, and out from it came many other projectiles of light that also hit the Mets within range.

The shower of blasts were plentiful, but Wolf was far enough away to avoid damage easily enough. But, with the other Navi there to play backup, he would be better geared to deal with the boss.
Charging power into his arms, he broke forward into a dash towards the behemoth. It jumped at him, as he expected it to. A low hop, but high enough that he could roll underneath and avoid the damage all together. Now placed directly behind the enemy, he was ready to fire. A full barrage of shots hit the Met at point blank in the rear, toppling it forward onto it's face. This was his chance to end it quickly, but with his charge shot being too slow and the other Navi preoccupied with the small-fry, he could only think of one method that would work, try as he may to not use it.
Left arm a-glow, he focused his power to materialize his Impact Canon. Placing it against the underside of the giant Metool, he got exactly what he was after when the shot pierced it's rather frail body, then ricocheted around inside it's nigh-impenetrable helmet. The interior damage proving too much for the virus to withstand caused it to break down as the canon dissipated from Wolf's arm.
As he had thought, the boss had some sort of AI altering field active, as when it was defeated, the other Metools immediately resumed their less threatening normal operations of wandering aimlessly and attempting to break down data into smaller data for collecting. Some of them even began chasing after data fragments from the boss that were scattered around on the ground. He watched them as they sifted through the code, until he found what he wanted. Some pink, heart-shaped accessory with a blue and white ribbon. He picked it up, blasting the virus closest to it before it could smash it with it's pick.
Trophy in-hand, he now just had to figure out some way to deal with this new duo he was faced with. Weakened, and unable to use his Impact Canon for a few hours, he was completely against antagonizing them, so he decided a friendly facade would be best.
"Thanks for your help back there!" he smiled as he de-materialized his visor. "You two make a good team." as he continued buttering them up.

With Gekuu taking care of the the weaker viruses, Wolf finished off the larger leader of the pack. With the Vulcan's piercing bullets and the Prism out, the viruses stood no chance against them. However, upon its destruction the duo noticed that they went back to normal. The draconic Navi relaxed, then sighed out loud, as the battle seemed weirdly too short for him. Not that he wanted a long, drawn out battle, it just felt weird. At least everything went fine.
On the other hand, Fortune was glad it went quickly.
Wolf looked a bit worn, though, and he was congratulating them on their teamwork after picking up some item. Even without knowing of his facade, they weren't exactly convinced. They were hardly a great team, they felt. But maybe he was just being overly nice.
"Save your thanks, and your money too." Gekuu said before turning around, starting to walk away.

Glad they turned down the reward, seeing as how he didn't want to put out much for such an assist (not that he had much on him to begin with), Wolf still felt as though he was being looked down upon. Like he was a charity case or something. "Well, at any rate, I've finished what I was here to do." He started in, not sure why he was concerning himself with the problems of others. "What brings the two of you to the Alpha Net? There's not much going on around here, except for this weird security zone I just triggered." He paused, looking around at the section of expanded platform that had yet to resize itself to it's original form. He scanned the area carefully for something worth guarding or something out of place. "Wonder what it's doing here. That Giant Metool was definitely placed here by someone on purpose, and in a place not many travel around nowadays. Doesn't it make you curious as to what it's supposed to deter us from?"

Gekuu stopped when Wolf asked him about what he was doing here. A potentially bold question to ask, but neither Fortune nor Gekuu were insulted. Wolf continue with his statements of something being protected here. And that the Mets were here to deter them from something.
"We're here because, well, why not? Figured I'd give this place a look over and train a bit with my Net-Op." The navi stated. He didn't look particularly perturbed by the 'questions' that Wolf brought up. "As to what those things were protecting, I can only guess what it is... that rift to where those digimon things came from.
Have you met any? Alpha Net was the first place that the digimon were spotted, and the only publicly known path between the net and their world. Maybe that was to keep unwanted visitors out. But that's only a guess."
Fortune remained silent. She had seen a few before, but only because her younger brother had shown them to her. She never actually fought one before, and knowing that they were tough to fight at times, she was hoping they wouldn't meet one in battle for a while.

"Maybe you're right, but there's still the question of who set it up." Wolf said, raising an eyebrow at Gekku. "Even the money I've put into my own security doesn't compare to modifying virus data and using it effectively to control other viruses in a guard-dog protocol. Something like that would cost a lot of money. Whoever put this here is willing to sacrifice a lot to stop guys like us from discovering whatever they're hiding."
Taking one last scan of the area, he couldn't gather anything of importance before the arena-sized platform finally began shrinking back down to size, ceasing it's glitchy state.
"Apparently there's more to it than just beating the boss to continue. And based on how the 'guard-dog' protocol works, it'll be smarter and tougher to fight next time it's set off." Wolf analyzed. "At any rate...now I'll be on my way to collect on a reward. I may yet find a lead from the client who sent me out here. Gotta admit I'm intrigued at this point."
Wolf lobbed over a cluster of data towards Gekku as he walked away. "This should be roughly the bits dropped by the mets you killed." In actuality, it was about 30% short, but it wasn't like he ever intended to see the two again.

Gekuu wasn't too worried about who set all this up. He lent an ear of sorts to Wolf as he spoke, but didn't share in the magnitude of his concern. Once he was done scanning, he tossed over some data to the draconic Navi, saying it was the bits he earned from the mets.
"Hm... fine, I'll take it."
Walking away himself, the data was put into Fortune's PET... and soon afterwards let out an audible sigh for Gekuu to hear.
"Eh? What is it, Fortune?"
"I guess that Navi was shady after all. At the very least, he shortchanged us. Judging by the number of mets you destroyed, there should be more. I've seen you destroy enough mets to know how much money I should be getting."
"So, what, you want me to..."
"To be fair, I wasn't expecting anything either. But he did give us something for our troubles. Let's leave it at that."
Gekuu agreed. And so, he took his leave, not wishing to trigger the security program here again when it returns.
